Jon has developed a syllabus of learning that involves theory, exercises, scales and pieces. He will customise each of these parts depending on your ability level, and the pace at which you are progressing.
He certainly pushes you to be the best you can be with lots of homework, personally I have found the whole experience both fun and challenging.
He’s expanded my horizons in terms of the genre of music that I thought I wanted to play, and has relayed his understanding of music through the ages to me. He is happy for me to have input into the path lessons take, and we have open and honest conversations of the progress I am making (or not!) in different areas (Be that hand synchronisation, theory, dynamics, technique etc.).
One of the best things I find is his determination to correct basic errors from the beginning, the practice of correcting each bar/exercise/scale before moving on has led to clear improvements in my playing.
Above all though, Jon is a friendly and approachable teacher, whose commitment to improving his own playing truly rubs off in the lessons. He also makes a delightful cup of tea, and has a good story or two up his sleeve!

I was very happy to find Jonathan as a piano teacher for myself. He works hard to engage me in the subject and tailors the lessons for my individual needs, making sure I make progress whilst still enjoying playing music. I cannot recommend him enough, as a fantastic teacher that will push your limits and exceed your own expectations. In addition, Jon has broadened my appreciation of music by introducing me to a wide range of composers and styles.

I’m making huge progress with Jon. Each session is tailored to my needs & goals, and the atmosphere is friendly and relaxed without compromising on the quality of work.
Jon is also helping me unlearn some bad habits I had picked up while playing on my own, and his attention to detail is definitely making a big difference.
I’m really glad I called Jon and I absolutely recommend him – he can help you on any aspect of your playing (technique, rhythm, harmony, theory etc…) and save you a lot of time in the process.
Looking forward to my next lesson!

Jon’s practical approach to teaching how to play the guitar has the rare power to make students comfortable – and that is the focus of my experience with him as a teacher. I was completely new to even holding a guitar when I first contacted him and my level of comfort grew gradually and steadily, but almost effortlessly. There is nothing as satisfactory as the moment you manage to keep up with the rhythm of a song for the first time and you realize that YOUR hands are playing it. I am positive that without his help I would still feel insecure around an instrument I’ve always loved.
He also works with your own needs and concerns. Being a songwriter, I needed a certain type of knowledge of how to arrange different chords harmoniously and him being open-minded about individual needs made it easy for me to get the type of training I wanted. 10/10
